Everything I have experienced, makes me who I am today and helps me offer the value that I do to the clients that I work with.” – Dr. Wilma Slenders
In this episode, Holly & Kristin talk with Dr. Wilma about:
- Realizing that university wasn’t easy led her to begin her career in physical education… because she was good at it!
- The importance of understanding what you do well and finding ways to dive deeper and try new things, even if they aren’t comfortable.
- As a girl and young woman growing up, she never felt there was anything she couldn’t do. It wasn’t until she experienced sexism and discrimination that she realized maybe SHE could do something about these issues.
- Her calling is to create awareness and take action. Discrimination and sexism are not women’s issues… they are people issues.
- The devasting impact that COVID-19 has had on women in the workplace.
Key Takeaways
- Companies are going to need to make some changes if they want to keep women engaged in the workforce.
- The new virtual world has made it easy to be invisible. If women don’t want to be overlooked for opportunities they need to create greater visibility for themselves.
- Women need to advocate for themselves and one another. Together women are stronger.
- COVID is requiring companies to re-evaluate the old social work rules. Work is becoming more about outcomes than time in a chair and systems need to evolve to support the new world of work.

The Ultimate Gift
Episode 12
"Thirteen people die daily waiting for an organ.” – Laurie Lee
In this episode, Holly & Kristin talk with Laurie Lee about:
- Laurie’s early career experiences that led her and her husband to start their own business.
- Her dad’s life-saving liver transplant and her journey into the world of living organ donation.
- A beautiful story of gratitude and paying it forward.
- Laurie’s organ donation documentary with living donors telling their stories on stage. Many describe “the calling” as a lightening strike.
Key Takeaways
- The amazing feeling that comes with saving someone’s life.
- The Kidney Champion Program helps patients seeking organs on how to conduct a social media campaign to find a donor. It’s an effective way to find an organ.
- People want to know that they are going to be okay if they make a living organ donation and to know that it’s not going to impact their health in the future.
- The cost of the organ donation is covered by the receiving patient’s insurance and there are many other resources available to make sure there is no financial impact to the organ donor.
Laurie Lee, is from Hawthorn Woods, IL, and now lives in Algonquin, IL with her husband Rob Lee. Her passions include her family & friends, adventure travel, SCUBA diving, her pets, her business Swift Passport Services , the outdoors, and transplant. Laurie is a non-directed kidney donor whose donation sparked a 6-person transplant chain on Nov 22, 2016. She was compelled to become a donor after her father, Dan Dickinson, received a lifesaving liver transplant in 2011.
Laurie is one of the original members of Northwestern Medicine’s Transplant Advisory Council, that powers Transplant Village. Transplant Village is an inspired group of organ recipients, donors and their families is united in their mission to support the future of organ transplantation at Northwestern Medicine while connecting and supporting the transplant community. Her main role with Transplant Village is facilitating a monthly workshop called the Kidney Champion Program which teaches people who are in need of a kidney different strategies to attract a living kidney donor.
Laurie enjoys working on projects in the transplant world that make an impact! She was one of the organizers of the 2018 Donor Rally which resulted in a Guinness World Record for the largest number of Living Organ Donors (410!) in one place. She is currently wholeheartedly invested in CrowdSource for Life and is a producer for a docuseries called Abundant which explores the concept of abundance through stories of non-directed organ donation. She believes this project is the catalyst that our society needs right now to pay attention and to take action, so that people don’t have to die or suffer waiting for an organ transplant. Her podcast, Donor Diaries, was developed to support this project and it’s initiatives.
Laurie is extremely interested in connecting with people who share her interest in flooding the donor pool, so that nobody has to wait for a life-saving transplant.

Who Am I? - Episode 11
Tuesday Nov 02, 2021
Tuesday Nov 02, 2021
"Change is so scary. It’s so easy to stay in our comfort zone.” – Laura Spiegel
In this episode, Holly & Kristin talk with Laura Spiegel about:
- Paint Her in Color, the website, and organization Laura created to provide emotional support for parents of children with special health care needs.
- Making the difficult choice to move from a corporate role and a career on the fast track to find purpose and meaning while also devoting time to her child with special health care needs.
- What it means to be a mom, caregiver, spouse, business owner, volunteer… and all the other many roles women fill in today’s world.
- The challenges associated with making changes in her life and how she worked through those changes.
Key Takeaways
- During times of change, lean into the emotions you are feeling. Recognize it’s okay to feel the way you do. It’s valid. Move through the emotions, don’t try to ignore them.
- Find your people… find your tribe. There are others out there going through similar life challenges and they can offer perspective and support. Find them. Lean into them.
- Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Asking for help is a strength, not a sign of weakness.
Laura Spiegel is the Founder of Paint Her in Color (https://www.paintherincolor.com), a website that supports emotional well-being in parents of children with heightened health care needs. With more than 100 personal stories, emotional support tools, and advocacy tips, Paint Her in Color gives parents the encouragement and resources needed to care for themselves while caring for others. Since July 2019, Spiegel’s site has touched nearly 20,000 parents of children with complex medical, developmental, and behavioral health care needs.
After graduating from the University of Notre Dame, Spiegel spent over a decade at the world’s largest biotech company. Much of her work involved partnering with care teams to help people with chronic illness lead happy and healthy lives. Her professional and personal worlds collided in 2013 when her own daughter was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis.
When she isn’t managing Paint Her in Color, Spiegel is a regular contributor at Special Needs Living Magazine and Different Dream Living. Her writing has been published by Scary Mommy, Kevin MD, The Mighty, Yahoo, MSN, Parenting Special Needs Magazine, Complex Child Magazine, Thrive Global, Source Mama, and Humana Press. Her work has also been featured by Passionate World Talk Radio, the University of Notre Dame, and the Diversity Breakthrough Podcast.
As a global healthcare advocate, Spiegel frequently partners with children’s hospitals and non-profit organizations to improve the experience of care for children and families. As a keynote speaker, she helps healthcare teams deliver difficult pediatric diagnoses with compassion – and helps parents establish routines that support healthy and balanced lives as caregivers.

Own Your Path - Episode 7
Tuesday Sep 07, 2021

Allow people to be who they are and try to understand where they are at."— David Topp
In this episode, Holly & Kristin talk with David, Lauren, Leah, and Sydney Topp about:
- Being an advocate for women and girls – three beautiful examples of strong young women taking their place in the world.
- The importance of allowing people to be themselves and shine in the world.
- How David’s daughters have been supported by their mom (Lisa) and dad – and the importance of partnership in leading family and those you lead in the world and workplace.
Key Takeaways
- Women of all ages need strong, supportive men in their lives to sponsor them and lift them up in the world and help pave the way to success.
- Learn to listen from the other person’s point of view. We don’t have all the answers ourselves.
- Be conscious and have an understanding of your own personal biases. Be transparent with others who are different and seek to understand each other's world and point of view. It will make you a better person and a better leader.
- Men also need women mentors and sponsors to help them better understand the world from the female perspective. Having a safe space that encourages open dialog is tremendously beneficial to see the world from many different vantage points.
- Do what you want to do and be yourself… do what makes you happy… don’t be afraid.
- There is support out there. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.
David Topp, is currently the Chief Human Resources Officer at Sterling Pharma Solutions where he has global responsibility for the company’s human resources function.
David has more than 20 years of experience within human resources and joined Sterling from Ellsworth Adhesives where he was most recently Vice President of Corporate Services. He has also held a number of leadership and senior executive roles at Sensient Technologies Corporation, Gehl Foods, and the YMCA. He has a master’s degree in Management from Cardinal Strich University and a bachelor’s degree in Supervision and Organized Leadership from Purdue University.
David has been a good friend and trusted thought partner on topics such as leadership, strategic thinking, and service excellence to Holly for over 20 years. He is kind, authentic, and truly demonstrates what it means to be a servant leader in the world and the workplace. It is our distinct honor to welcome Dave and his daughters to the podcast with this episode. Dave and his wife Lisa have raised three amazing young women who exhibit strength, wisdom, and courage at a time when our world needs them desperately. We hope they encourage other women, young and old alike, to step into all they can be through their inspiring stories.
Lauren Topp, 22, is in her final semester of nursing school. She has an interest in critical care, cardiac care, ICU, and emergency room work. She also works as a barista at a local coffee shop for fun and plans to keep that job for a while.

She also just finished a twelve-week intensive course in Persian. Leah is in Army ROTC and upon graduation will commission as a second lieutenant in the US Army.

Focus on Your Success - Episode 6
Tuesday Aug 24, 2021
Tuesday Aug 24, 2021
In this episode, Holly & Kristin talk with Deborah Shames about:
- Early career experiences that created the platform for Deborah’s commitment to showing up confident and polished. It wasn’t an easy road for Deborah either! An amazing story of commitment and courage.
- Deborah’s passion for helping others (and especially women) feel confident, prepared, and competent in their roles as executives, leaders and entrepreneurs.
- The secrets to being “memorable” when you present.
- The things women need to let go of to show up as confident, competent and authentic.
Key Takeaways
- When you need to address an audience or present a topic, always know your intention. Right before you present, review your intention for the meeting or presention, not the content.
- Never write out, read or memorize your content as this comes across as inauthentic
- Pick only three items that you want to cover in your content as this makes remembering content easier and doesn’t overwhelm your audience with too many messages.
Deborah Shames, Prior to co-founding Eloqui with David Booth, Deborah was an award-winning film and television director. She founded the only female owned production company in the San Francisco Bay Area-- Focal Point Productions, which she ran for 15 years.
